Potala Palace, once the seat of Tibetan government and the winter palace of Dalai Lama, is the symbolic landmark in Lhasa top 10 China tours. Your first sight of its towering, fortress-like walls is a moment you will remember for a long time.

With the history of 1300 year, the 13-storey palace contains more than a thousand rooms. Pilgrims and tourists alike shuffle down through three storeys, trying to take in the magnificent chapels and prayer halls. It was built in the middle of the seventh century by King Songtsen Gampo for political and defensive reason. But it is also said that the palace was built for Songtsen Gambo’s bride, the princess Wencheng of Tang Dynasty China vacation deals.

The layout of Potala Palace includes the rooftop White Palace popular China travel package (the eastern part, used for the living quarters of Dalai Lama), the central Red Palace (used for the religious functions) and the monk’s dormitories in the west. In the Red Palace, there are eight holy stupas including the stupa of the 5th Dalai Lama. From historical record, about 3,656,300 grams gold was used to overlay this stupa.

Tickets for the palace are very limited. The day before your visit China tour guide, take your passport and head to the far southwest exit and look for the ticket stand inside the gate. You can show your passport to get a free ticket voucher with a time stamped on it.
