Located at the juncture of Yushan [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and Dexing counties of Shangrao City in Jiangxi Province, the scenic area covers some 756 square kilometers. The mountain gets its name from the fact that it has three peaks, named Yujing, Yuhua and Yuxu, which seem to have the three ancestral deities of Taoism called Yuqing, Shangqing and Taiqing sitting upon them. Of the three, the Yujing Peak, with an altitude of 1,819 meters, is the highest and is situated in the middle of the mountain. The watching sunrise here is one of the wonders of the Sanqing Mountain.

The mountain is narrow and long and extends from south to north. It displays a granite forest with the largest density in distribution and most varieties in the world. The scenic area is home of 2,373 kinds of high-grade plants and 1,728 species of wild animals, and constitutes a leading environment East Asia in terms of biodiversity. The continuous changes of landform have resulted in unique imposing peaks, queerly-shaped rocks, saults and quiet valleys. Regarding its natural terrain, the Sanqing Mountain is steep in the east, wonderful in the west, elegant in the north and marvelous in the south. There are nine major scenic areas, including the Nanqing Garden, the Wanshou Garden, the Yujing Peak, the Sanqing Palace [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and the Xihua Platform, and 10 major wonders, such as the "python-like rock", the "girl-like peak" and the "divine dragon amusing a pine".

The mountain has provided a place for the Taoists of all previous dynasties to cultivate their beliefs and as a result is known as "an outdoor Taoist museum" [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. The ancient architectural complex of Sanqing Palace, arranged according to the Eight Diagrams, boasts a history of over 1,600 years and comprises at least 230 ancient buildings and cultural sites such as temples, halls mansions, ponds, bridges, tombs, platforms and towers.
