In Henan province, the silo-cave courtyard is built by first digging a 10-12m long and 6-7m deep square or quadrate pit on a level loess ground, then making 8-12 caves on the four walls, and digging a slope leading to the ground in a cave at one corner of the courtyard as the door opening for in and out [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
Silo-cave courtyards in Sanmenxia, Henan Province have been preserved relatively well. There are still more than 100 underground villages and nearly 10,000 patio courtyards, which display a remarkable scene where one sees no house and no person above the ground but hears people speaking. One of the earlier courtyards has a history more than 200 years with six generations living there.
