Covering an area of 7.2 square kilometers, Forest Zoo [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] is located on White Cloud Mountain in the southeast of Dalian. The zoo is based on the hill at the back and overlooks the river, shines like a green pearl in the city, and has been named a National AAAA-level Scenic Area by the National Tourism Administration.

The zoo can be divided into a Captive Breeding Zone and Free-Roaming Zone [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] built in 1997 and 2000 respectively. The two zones are connected by a 1,200-meter long cableway on which visitors can take a cable car from one zone to another by way of the Tourist Service Center. More than 3,000 wild animals of 200 species reside in the zoo, many of which are first class national protected animals, and some have been introduced from foreign countries. The main animals in the zoo are Siberian Northeast Tigers, bears, gelada baboons, chimpanzees, zebras, giraffes, Asian elephants, and lions.

The species of animals in the zoo are incredibly novel, unique, and fascinating. The Captive Breeding Zone includes areas such as Hundred-Bird Garden, Dinosaur Garden [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] (which features many colored dinosaur sculptures), Tiger Mountain, Bear Mountain, Primate Animal Zone, and Herbivore Zone. As well, there are pandas donated by the Beijing Zoo and squirrels donated by Japan.

The Free-Roaming Zone can be divided into an African Section, High Mountain Section, Hound Section, Asian Section, and Brute Section. This zone contains more than 2,000 animals of 50 species. Besides, the Rainforest Hall combines a dissemination of science, species protection, nursing, breeding research, education, and gardening. Scientific innovations also allow for a simulating tropical and subtropical environment for over 15,000 wild plants of 400 species. Covering an area of 10,000 square meters, the Rainforest Hall is composed of 5 sections, namely Entry Service Area, Man & Nature Area, Desert Landscape Area, Tropical Fruit Area, and Rainforest Area. Visitors can watch the wild animals through the windows of their cable car, including bears, tigers, lions, hounds, camels, oxen, and horses. Last but not least, they can feed herbivores by the palm of their hands in order to gain a harmonious relationship with animals.
