Tea culture is a famous part of Sichuan culture and throughout Sichuan [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] there are teahouses where the real tea culture can be experienced. Teahouses are popular amongst the young and old and is the best place to gather with friends for a day of leisure and is a absolute must do whilst in Chengdu. There are three main characteristics that you will see in all teahouses in Chengdu, which are: bamboo furniture, tea sets and the tea doctors.

Bamboo Furniture

In almost all tea houses in Sichuan you will find that the tables and chairs are made of bamboo. During the hot summers sitting on bamboo chairs is more comfortable and locals use bamboo to the craft the furniture as it is one of the easily found materials in Sichuan [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Porcelain Tea Sets

The traditional porcelain tea sets are known as “Gai Wan Cha” consisting of a cup, tea tray and lid. When choosing tea types there is a wide variety and different prices, some of the most rare and exquisite teas are also available.


Tea Brewers / Tea Doctors

In the teahouses you will often see tea brewers or tea doctors walking around with long spouted teapots. In Chengdu [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] each table is not provided with their own teapots and it’s the job of the tea doctors to refill the cups with water and in doing so they are so skilled they don’t even spill a drop of water in the process. Sometimes the tea doctors will even perform some acrobatic skills while refilling to keep you entertained.

Teahouse Entertainment

Teahouses are a place of leisure and there is a great variety of entertainment for customers. There is Mahjong and chess which is popular amongst the elderly generation who like to gather and socialize over a game or two. There are also Sichuan opera performances with the famous face changing keeping many entertained.
