Jiayuguan Pass City is located about six kilometers southwest of Jiangyuguan City (main destination for Silk Road tour) of Gansu province and represents the western starting point of the section of the Great Wall which was constructed during the Ming Dynasty. This pass covers an area of about 33,500 square meters and lies at the base of a narrow valley and taking the name from Jiayu which is one of the surrounding hills. It is referred to as the finest example of its kind on the earth and best preserved of the ancient military fortresses of the Great Wall.

The Jiayuguan Pass (an option for China tour deals) was constructed in the year 1372 and there is a legend that the official charged with overseeing the building of the pass had demanded that the foremen not squander a single brick. For most of the part, the builders were successful and the project was finished with only one brick surplus to the requirements. It was actually left and the site and now has become famous among tourists visiting the area.

This pass is constructed in three concentric layers. The inner city makes the central area which contains the largest of the buildings of pass; and outer city section which is surrounded by a large wall dotted with the watch towers, high terraced pavilions and turrets and finally a moat for the purpose of defense. All of these features combined for making it a daunting prospect for any attacker.

The inner city is trapezoid-shaped and covers an area of 25,000 square meters. It is enclosed by the city wall which is 640 meters in length and 11 meters in height. The inner city has east and west gates which are known as Guanghua and Rouyan. Each of these city gates is protected by its own smaller guard tower. Some of the tourist places in the inner city are Youji Jiangjun’s Mansion, Jing pavilion and Wenchang Hall. Guandi temple lies outside the east gate of fort along with theater tower and a series of grand archways.
